Winter: a poem

It's dark all day and it's dark all night

The sun comes around but the clouds hide the light

The world feels small but the sky seems huge, pressing down on the earth with its colourless hues.

Mist, like a veil, is dropped and then lifted

Shadows unstable, reality shifted

Seamlessly, day seems to slip into night

Familiar images stolen from sight

The stars remain absent, the moon is obscured

The sunrise awaited, its promise assured

The owl and the fox fail to visit tonight,  leaving just silence, a deafening quiet

Trees stand like giants, unmoving yet bold

Without fur or feather, their story untold

A chill in the air, a traitorous tryst

As their leaves fall to ground, and lie there dew-kissed

At dawn, the birdsong is muted and low

The blackbird and sparrow don't put on their show

Daylight unfolds as a cold, milky gloom

And lamplight is needed in every room

Dawn becomes morning, becomes afternoon,

The fire is lit and the coals warm the room

Maybe tomorrow the light will return

Until then, the bitter outdoors I will spurn
