Little Venice in Alsace

dianeneilson

I've never been to Venice. Its something we have talked about but the stars just never seem to align.

Yesterday we cycled to Colmar, a pleasant ride through cornfields and alongside canals, mostly flat and perfect for just enjoying being at one with nature.

When we arrived in the historic centre we locked up the bikes and explored on foot. It was beautiful, a 14th century village encapsulated within a larger modern town; beautiful painted wooden timber buildings; a tumbling fountain; a soaring church in the centre and lots of flowers.

We wandered the cobbled streets until we came to 'Little Venice', so named for its canals, punted boats and quaint houses.

Bridges criss-crossed the waterways, cluttered with padlocks declaring lovers' undying love, and the ideal spot for getting that perfect photograph.

We found a table at one of the many cafes and had a traditional lunch of goats cheese salad, bread, ham and cheese, along with a flagon of wine, before making our way back across the Alsace countryside, pedalling lazily beside the canals and enjoying the breeze in our faces.
