Colours of Autumn: a poem

Bright holly berries and maple leaves

Squirrels collecting their nuts and seeds

Rosy cheeks on a frosty day as children wrap up warm and play

Orange leaves of the sturdy oak

Toasty soldiers in a runny yolk

The toothy grin of a pumpkin ghoul and glowing embers as the bonfire cools

The yellowing fall of the sycamore tree

The last of the wasp and the bumble bee

The weakening sun as it slips from the sky as the moon takes its place to watch from on high

The ivy, a home for the birds and the bugs

Thick pea soup in oversized mugs

The grass remains green but enters its slumber, whilst the fir trees stand guard over all lying under

There's an icy blue to the autumn sky

And the stream is now hurried as it rushes on by

Fires are lit and we turn back the  clocks, but violas and pansies stand proud in their pots

As the fern turns to bracken all crispy and brown

The acorns and chestnuts all fall to the ground

And whilst stars prick their holes in an inky black sky, the first frost of autumn waves summer goodbye
